False Advertising

March 15, 2024Calling the 16’ light string an “extension” is false advertising! While you can only use it with the 50’ and 100’ sets, according to their CS, you can’t add them to the sets to extend them another 16’. According to CS when I tried to add it to a 100’ set and had problems (that ended up not being related to the additional string), it’s not an extension, as they claim the 100’ power supply will only work up to 100’ and not more, therefore, there’s no such thing as an “extension.” It’s a replacement string, not an extension and its description should be reworded. Either that, or CS needs to stop claiming it won’t work to extend beyond the length of the 50’ and 100’ sets, because it actually does. Pros who install the lights for others confirmed that the power supplies for the 50’, 100’ and 150’ sets are the same.
That being said, thankfully, their CS is wrong. After replacing a bad string, I now have 116’ working on a 100’ power supply and controller with no data issues. I’m also using a 4’ pro jump cable without issue, which they also said couldn’t be done, when others told me it can. The only good thing CS did was to refund me for both my orders, without asking for me to return anything. Whether that is because they know they’re misrepresenting their product on their site, I don’t know, but they were very quick to offer a refund, which makes me suspicious. I love the lights, the app is so-so and not intuitive. If it weren’t for a Facebook group I’m in, I wouldn’t know I could use other people’s DIYs.
Best Christmas lights I have ever purchased

February 18, 2024I wanted to try these cause I was tired of putting lights up every year. These worked for me all winter in Canada and we hit -47 below for over a week and never once had an issue. The app is easy to use and I really like that you can control each led individually. The one small complaint I have is that the clips that comes with the kit there isn't enough of them. I ended up purchasing some 10mm RGB clips and I put them on every other light. The 3m sticks very well just be sure to clean the area with rubbing alcohol before wanting to stick them to the soffit. The kit I purchased I ended up cutting the strands in a few places and soldered the wires together and never had any issues. The colors and combinations are endless. Everyone liked these light so much all of my neighbors have purchased kits and are just waiting on nicer weather to get theirs installed. I don't have enough good things to say about these lights.
Exceptionally nice, bright lights with lots of customizations but app needs work

February 3, 2023I managed to get two 100ft strands and just finished getting them up and running yesterday. The app installation process and setup was super easy. I installed each strand one at a time and the app automatically set them up in a group. Alexa integration was very easy. The lights simply put look incredible, and are very bright. I have them set at 40% at night which lights up the entire side of my house.
The Govee app needs some work. I tried setting up a schedule in the app which wouldn't work. Also, when I select the lighting group (which combines both strands) and pick a preinstalled pattern like Valentines Day, the light colors change to Valentines Day colors but just stay at static colors. I have to select each strand individually and apply the lighting effects to each strand in order for the lights to change colors and brightness according to the selected pattern/effect. I can do this in Alexa Routines however, so it works but this is a quirk. Routines however in Alexa work very well, and once I did the Alexa pairing, the controls work better than using the app alone. I have found that even though Alexa allows you to set up a routine that is supposed to set the lighting plan as well as the brightness at the same time that the brightness doesn't change. I had to set two Alexa Routines - one to change the pattern to solid soft white at 10pm for night lights, and a second Routine at 10:01pm to change the brightness to 10% (so I don't bother my neighbors at night).
I want to set up my lights after 10pm using segmenting so that only certain lights would be on, but I haven't figured out a way yet to do that and have it work with Alexa.
It would be helpful if there was documentation on how to set up plans and Alexa integrations. You have to just play around to see what works. Also, I would say Govee should have molded tabs with screw holes into the light bases to make it easier to screw them up if desired instead of just relying on the tape. The tape is excellent 3m tape, but it isn't going to work in all situations, and when my feet are 12ft up on a ladder in the tallest eve on my house putting these up, I don't want to be back up there again in case tape fails. I screwed each light up of the two 100ft strands individually using led clips, but molded tabs with screw holes in the bases would have greatly simplified this job. Also, I had to contact support to verify that the two strands needed to be installed in the same direction, i.e. control/lights, control/lights, or lights/control, lights/control in order for patterns to work correctly. Their documentation does not specify this anywhere I can find. Their support replied very quickly.
All being said, I am extremely pleased with these, and they are well worth the money. I can't stress enough how fantastic the patterns look, and they function excellently for security lighting also. They do come with a 3 yr warranty per the included documentation (also asked Govee support for clarification on this), not 1 yr like the Govee website says. I installed mine so that at a later date when they start selling extensions, I can easily expand my two 100ft strands so I can light the back of my house also since each controller can handle 150ft. Two 100ft strands was enough to light the front and both sides of my house skipping one 12ft section that doesn't need light. I am so glad I spent the money on these to get the RGBIC and Alexa integration vs just a basic set of LED strips.
If they stand the test of time, I'll be very happy.

December 21, 2023Tired of spending $80+ every winter on new Christmas lights that would burn out or die within a few months, I've decided to try the Govee lights. With a 3 year warranty, I'm hoping to have a much better experience.
Pros: relatively easy to install, very bright (I run mine at 50% brightness and they're still as bright as any other Christmas lights on the street), power supply on both kits (50ft and 100ft kits) were the same as the 150ft kit (so decently over powered and shouldn't burn out any time soon), app is fairly intuitive and setup was easy.
Cons: 3M tape sticks well to the house, not very well to the lights, Govee could make the backing of each light more textured for better adhesion I think. Only comes with enough screw clips for about 1 every other light. Given how crucial alignment is for good looking lights, I want at least 1 per light. Had to buy some random clips from Amazon to finish putting them up. I strongly suggest Govee not cheap out on this and just throw in another 2-3 dozen little plastic clips in each kit. Not a big fan of how visible these lights are, a light grey tone or beige would have been nice to blend in with the soffits better.
And my biggest complaint by far: you can't buy blank extensions for this! If you have multiple gables and want to run an extension between each without lights, you're going to need to DIY one. The 100ft kit comes with 1 such extension and the 150ft kit apparently comes with two, but none in the 50ft kit and can't buy them by themselves.
I also wish there were 2 outputs on the power supply. My power outlet is near the center of the house, so I had to buy 2 kits to run lights in each direction from the outlet.
